Our Trip to Iceland - Hvitserkur Sea Stack Review Hvitserkur - Dinosaur Rock in Northern Iceland Marquette, MI  -  March 24, 2017  -  Well, we've been in Iceland for three days now and despite the weather, it's been an absolutely amazing trip! During the last few days we've had pretty rough winds, rain and fog, but we've managed to find a break in the poor weather each day to take in the views and capture some shots.

We've just come from our first location in Northern Iceland: Hvitserkur or the Dinosaur Rock. These geographical wonder was my favorite stop so far! All of the locations we've visited have been fantastic, but we haven't been able to get very close. With this sea stack, you can get right on the black sand beach and enjoy everything the site has to offer.

The site has so much to take advantage of during any point in the day. Morning - perfect for sunrise. Mid-day - low tide, amazing patterns in the sand. Late Day - High tide, perfect for reflections.

There's also a great waterfall at the mouth of the ocean that doubles as a site to see of its own and another spectacular foreground for Hvitserkur.

Reasons to visit:

  • Great View of the ocean from Northern Iceland Coastline
  • Easy access
    • Short walk to platform
    • More challenging to get to the beach but very doable
  • Amazing geographical landmark
  • Perfect location for sunrise shots
  • Perfect location for mid day shots - low tide.
    • During low tide, there are lines left in the sand from the water that make for a perfect foreground

Now I'm staying at a very quaint little horse farm/inn: Gauksmyri. The rooms are quite comfortable and they have tons of Icelandic Horses - hopefully they'll let us photography them :P!

We hope this helps you plan your own trip to Iceland and take in the sites. Check out some photos from our trip so far - check back for aurora pictures!

Saddleback Photography's New Studio Space At Inspire Art Gallery in Traverse City, MI The Saddleback Photo Photography Gallery

Marquette, MI  -  December 17, 2016  -  Today we're coming to you from our recently acquired studio space in the Inspire Art Gallery. This new Traverse City art gallery, recently having opened in August 2016, hosts artists from all over Michigan. With about 20 current artists, we managed to nab a spot on the wall for ourselves!

At the beginning of November we framed, packaged, and wired over 120 prints to bring down to our new space here in Traverse City. The arrangement took some time, but it came together nicely!

With Traverse City having a large horse enthusiast population, our equine photography as been doing quite well.

Today we just added 5 more pieces to our collection included a set of limited edition, custom made coasters. This set, Michigan Waterfall themed, is a high quality four piece set with a strong finish to protect the image and cork backing to prevent slipping. There are currently one 2 sets of Saddleback Photography Custom Coasters out there! Contact Lauren about getting your set custom made.

If you're in the TC area, we encourage you to come check it out! We've got sales you can't find anywhere going on like 15% off all hanging pieces and BOGO sales on individual prints. Come see our work and everyone else's! The gallery is home to photographers, painters, woodworkers, jewelers, and is the perfect place to pick up a last minute Christmas gift.

Our work will be in this gallery, at the very least, November of 2017.

Marquette, MI  - June 27, 2016  -  We're back from our long trip! Saddleback Photography accomplished a pretty good new record for ourselves hitting 4 different states in 72 hours! Visiting Boston to see my sister for her bridal shower and bachelorette party, my sister and I made our way from Mass to Rhode Island, then New Hampshire and finally, Maine. We spent a total of 2 and a half days in Maine spotting in Portland on the way up to Bar Harbor.

On our second day in Maine, I was determined to get to Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse for sunset! The evening was setting up for a perfect night with the golden sun peaking through the clouds. We made it to Bass Harbor just as the sun was starting to go down and the colors filled the sky. Oranges, pinks, and purples painting the sky in between the thin lines of clouds.

When I found a place to set up, I met a number of other photographers there for the same exact reason! My favorite shot from the night was me getting creative and catching the reflection of the lighthouse in a calm pool of water!

Wondering how to set up for a night similar to this? Here's our camera settings and suggestions:

  1. DSLR Camera - We used a Nikon D7000, however, any camera where you can control the shutter speed and ISO will do.
  2. Tripod - You do not have to spend a lot of money on good gear to get a shot like this, however, a tripod is 100% necessary!
  3. Wide Angle Lens - We suggest a wider angle lens for shots like this. We used a Tokina 11-16, but a basic 18-55 kit lens will also work
    1. Note, if using a standard f4.5 kit lens, you will likely need a higher ISO than the settings suggested, or attempt a longer exposure time.
  4. Camera Settings - Our shot was taken at:
    1. Focal Length - 11 mm (in 35mm: that's 16mm)
    2. Shutter Speed - 1/30 seconds
    3. Aperture - F9
    4. ISO - 1250
  5. Other Suggestions -
    1. ‚ÄčShoot in Raw - To get a final image like this, it is MUCH easier to acquire when shooting in Raw format.
    2. Use a Remote Trigger - Whether it is wireless, wired to the camera, or even a 2 second delay timer, use one of these things to keep your camera from moving during the exposure!
    3. Enjoy the moment!!!!!!!!!!

Saddleback Photography caught Northern Lights in Marquette, MI

Marquette, MI  -  May 27, 2016  -  Throughout the month of May, we have gotten to do a lot! We have covered First Communion at St. Peter Cathedral, cover multiple community events in Marquette, and even won third place in a state-wide photography contest! Best of all though, was our experience with the Northern Lights earlier this month!

One of the perks of living in the U.P. is something I never got back in Rochester Hills: the Northern Lights. Around 4 AM on May 8th (Mother's Day), the Northern Lights hit a peak. They were the best we have seen so far!

Andrew and I drove out to our favorite beach as soon as we heard the lights were really dancing. Making my way down the trail to the sandy shore, I tried to see the lights through the trees; I was scared I was going to miss their activity!

Once we got to the beach I was amazed by what I was seeing. Quickly I set up my camera and tripod and started shooting away. We made our way up the coastline and shot for a full hour and a half, the sky giving us beautiful photo after beautiful photo. There were pillars in the sky and you could even see the lights pulsing with energy!

Check out more photos from this night in Marquette, in our nightscape gallery.

A group photo from First Communion by Saddleback Photo

Marquette, MI  -  May 4, 2016  -  Having taken photographs in St. Peter Cathedral for a project earlier in the year, Saddleback Photography was contacted for an brand new experience. St. Peter Cathedral of Marquette wanted us to photograph First Communion this month!

This past Sunday we attended mass and set up to get the best shots we could get! The event started with a grand procession of the kids down the main aisle of the church. The kids entered by walking under the arched swords of the Knights of Columbus.

After mass, we were able to take the time and get photos of some of the kids right in front of the gorgeous alter display. With everyone looking amazing in their dresses and suits, it wasn't hard to get some great photos to keep as memories for the families.

We had a great time getting photographs of the kids and experiencing our first Catholic mass. If you're interesting an checking out the photos from this event, view the gallery here!

Don't forget to contact Lauren if you have an event you'd like covered!

Marquette, MI  -  April 23, 2016  -  Today we received a brand new 20"x30" print of one of our photos from the Midwest Horses Fair.  The photo of the Cremello stud was a spur of the moment catch! While we were at the horse fair we were wandering down "Stallion Alley" and there he was! This handsome creme colored stallion was standing in the back of his dark stall looking absolutely bored. Slipping my camera lens in between the bars of the stall, he quickly become interested in what was doing. It seemed like something clicked for him and he knew that was about to take his photo. He stood there, perfectly still, almost waiting for me to hold down the shutter.

All I got was this one photo before he came closer to greet me, but the one is definitely enough!

The print came out amazing thanks to Nations Photo Lab! We are looking forward to matting the image ourselves to be installed on our wall at home.

Our photo in it's new 20x30 frame!

Don't forget you can get your own prints. Check out our galleries and find one you want on your wall!

Check out the frame we put the print in! It fits perfectly and is ready to go up one our wall!
